WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.), a key member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said on June 28 that a Republican plan to privatize Amtrak would drain funds from the Railroad Retirement system. Huge tax increases on remaining rail carriers and employees would become necessary to keep the fund afloat, and would have the potential to “devastate the railroad industry and its employees and jeopardize the entire railroad retirement system.”
