NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey’s state-owned public transit system failed to collect more than 240,000 fares in 2016 as a result of staffing shortages and train crowding, The New York Times reported Sunday. The Times, citing a letter reportedly sent in March to the head of NJ Transit by its conductors’ union, said the amount could represent more than $5.5 million in lost revenue.
