CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — The bi-partisan transportation bill recently passed by the Senate has the potential to funnel hundreds of millions of dollars into rail freight improvements, according to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit group dedicated to reducing dependency on cars in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Rail Solution has proposed a 1,000-mile Steel Interstate prototype operating between Memphis and Harrisburg as a model for a national rail system. The Steel Interstate would parallel I-40, I-75, and I-81, and serve Tennessee, northern Mississippi and Alabama, western Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

The pilot project is congruent with Norfolk Southern’s Crescent Corridor project, linking the Southeast to the Northeast. Trucks currently carry most of the freight between the two regions.
