(SEPTA issued the following news release on May 21.)

PHILADELPHIA — Responding to the action by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to raise the national terror alert to “high,” the SEPTA Transit Police Department has been placed on an elevated state of alert.

Federal officials say there have been no specific threats against targets in the United States, or against public transportation.

During an “Orange Alert” SEPTA Transit Police remain in constant communication with City, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

SEPTA Transit Police will be placed in extended shifts if information indicates a more specific threat against public transportation or the region.

Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the SEPTA Transit Police Department has undergone extensive counter-terrorist training and is prepared to respond immediately to any threat, in close coordination with other authorities.

SEPTA encourages its customers to be vigilant for suspicious persons or objects and report any concerns to uniformed SEPTA employees or police.
