LONDON — Several passengers were injured on Friday when a passenger train derailed north of London, and police said there were reports some may have been killed, according to a wire service.

“There are reports of fatalities although there is no confirmed information at this early stage, a police spokesman said. “It is a serious crash and is being treated as a major incident.”

The derailment at Potters Bar was close to Hatfield where an express came off the tracks in October 2000, killing four people. Britain’s rail network has been hit by a string of disasters in recent years.

One eyewitness said she saw a woman under a railway bridge which appeared to have collapsed.

“I saw two injured people walking away,” she told Reuters. “One man had head wounds. The train is tipped slightly with its wheels in the air.”

A spokesman for operators WAGN confirmed that the derailed train was its 1245 BST service from King’s Cross, London to King’s Lynn, Norfolk.
