LONDON — A slow-moving train hit platform buffers at a station in eastern England on Monday, injuring 31 people, police said.
According to a wire service, the train, 10 carriages carrying about 400 people from Crewe in central England, hit the buffers at tiny Walton-on-the-Naze station, 70 miles (110 kms) east of London, British Transport Police said.
A spokesman for rail infrastructure company Railtrack said the train, which was carrying railway enthusiasts during a national holiday, was traveling at less than 10 mph (16 kph) when the accident occurred.
Essex Ambulance Service said most of the passengers who were hurt suffered minor injuries. One person was believed to have suffered fractured ribs and another a broken leg.
