PIKETON, Ohio — A railroad worker was struck and killed by a train Monday in Pike County in southern Ohio, authorities said.

The victim was an employee of Norfolk Southern Railway, Pike County Sheriff Larry Travis said in a statement. The Batavia man was struck by a northbound Norfolk Southern train while he was working on a piece of equipment, Travis said.

Officers from the sheriff’s department and the Piketon police department were called to the scene at about 11 a.m. Monday. The victim was pronounced dead by the county coroner, and the body was taken to Hamilton County for an autopsy, Travis said.

The victim’s name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.

A message seeking additional details was left Monday night at the sheriff’s office.

Rudy Husband, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern Corp., confirmed Monday night that a company employee was killed around 11 a.m. when he was struck by a Norfolk Southern train in Pike County. Husband said he had no additional comment.

Norfolk Southern Corp., based in Norfolk, Va., controls Norfolk Southern Railway. The freight railway operates approximately 21,200 route miles in 22 eastern states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada.
