WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Retail Federation (NRF) and the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) urged Congress to step in to avert a potential nationwide strike next week, saying the disruption of rail service “during the busy holiday shopping season could be devastating.”

The two unions representing dispatchers and locomotive engineers could go on strike Dec. 6 after a 30-day “cooling” off period expires. Railroads claim a strike or lockout could cost the U.S. economy $2 billion a day.
