MITCHELL, S.D. — Crews for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad were working Monday to repair rails and clean up after a derailment north of Ethan.
Eight cars of a 21-car BNSF train headed to Mitchell left the track Sunday afternoon. Some of them carried ethanol or liquid fertilizer.
Alan Miller, the Davison County emergency management director, said only a small amount of liquid fertilizer leaked out. There were no injuries.
Gus Melonas, a spokesman for BNSF, said the cause of the derailment was under investigation and that the company expected the line to be reopened by late Monday afternoon.
