CUMBERLAND, Md. — Within the last month, some CSX employees who were furloughed in Cumberland have been called to return to work.
“Based on vacation schedules, we have called some folks back,” CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan said. “Right now we have brought back 21 employees but we still have 55 out.”
Sullivan said more employees may be called back to work depending on demands.
“The work force is always going to fluctuate depending on the work demands of CSX.”
In late February, 57 employees were furloughed in the Cumberland area with approximately 47 of those furloughs related to the train operations; the other 10 were on the mechanical repair side of operations.
The Cumberland site had about 800 active employees at that time.
Earlier that same month, the State Journal reported 37 employees were terminated in Cabell and Greenup counties in Kentucky. Thirty-five of those workers were from the company’s Russell facility and the rest were from the Huntington, W.Va., facility.
At that time, both Sullivan and the Journal reported a CSX spokesman said they hope to rehire all the laid-off workers once the economy improves.
