TAMAROA, Ill. — Some southern Illinois residents worry about railroad cars not staying on their tracks after a train derailment on Interstate 57 and another in Tamaroa.

Earlier this month a train derailed from an overpass on Interstate 57 near Benton. Railroad cars filled with coal fell onto the Interstate below. Only minor injuries were reported.

In February of last year, a train derailed in Tamaroa, dumping more than 95-thousand gallons of hazardous materials. About one-thousand residents near the town were forced to evacuate.

Jackson County Emergency Management Agency coordinator Derek Misener says when such an incident happens, people should keep themselves informed through watching television or listening to the radio.

He also says residents living near those tracks should close all doors and turn off ventilation systems.
