ELKO, Nev. — Elko firefighters were still waiting Friday evening for trucks from Salt Lake City to haul away spilled ethanol alcohol from a train derailment.
One of 11 train cars that derailed Friday morning was a tanker containing about 30,000 gallons of ethanol alcohol. About half of the liquid leaked out of the tanker, according to Elko Fire Capt. Shane Wiggins.
A hazardous materials team from the Union Pacific Railroad and a representative of the Environmental Protection Agency out of Carson City also responded to the scene.
The cause for the derailment is under investigation.
Wiggins requested that residents avoid the area around the Union Pacific yard.
