KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Monday, the Southwest Chief was trapped about 80 miles west of Chicago when it ran into ice- and snow-covered tracks about 3:15 p.m. The Chief, which originates in Los Angeles, had left Kansas City shortly before 8 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Chicago around 3:30 p.m. Two more trains — the Illinois Zephyr from Quincy, Ill., and the California Zephyr from the San Francisco Bay area — were halted behind the Chief about 5 p.m. In all, some 500 passengers were stranded.
