(The Associated Press circulated the following story on June 22.)
ALBANY, N.Y. — Amtrak is threatening to halt passenger service on its Adirondack route to Montreal because the state is behind in its subsidy to support the train.
Amtrak officials said the state owes it $4.4 million in payments dating back to early last year. The state’s contract to support the New York City-to-Montreal service expires at the end of September.
State transportation officials told the Albany Times Union that they’re waiting for Amtrak to produce ridership and revenue information before the payments are made.
But Amtrak said it has provided all the information required and can’t afford to keep waiting for the state to make the payments. If the money isn’t paid by the end of June, Amtrak said it will begin the process of ending the daily service between Manhattan and Montreal.
