RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia’s transportation secretary is planning an inquiry into last week’s decision to shut down Amtrak service between Richmond and Washington, D.C.

Citing a commitment to safety, the CSX Corporation, which owns the tracks, decided to close the line for four days because of the snow. The move stranded travelers and shut down commuter rail service in northern Virginia.

Whitt Clement told the Richmond Times-Dispatch he wants to improve the response time the next time similar conditions occur.

Clement said he’ll meet with CSX and other rail officials Tuesday.

Among them will be top executives of the Virginia Railway Express, who said they don’t see why the operation was entirely shut down.
