WASHINGTON — In a key tentative five-year settlement with Verizon, the members of the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers won a crucial victory that strikes a chord with all workers struggling in today’s insecure economy.

These 78,000 Verizon workers have won a tentative contract with Verizon Communications that meets their goals of protecting job security rights, health care and other key benefits, and provides fair wages and pension increases. These workers’ dedication throughout the contract negotiations serves as inspiration to all hardworking Americans who are fighting for a better future during this very difficult economic environment. CWA President Morton Bahr and IBEW President Edwin D. Hill should be commended for their perseverance and conviction during this difficult and long negotiation period.

The union movement was proud to stand by these workers in their struggle for better jobs and a more secure future. The solidarity shown by these strikers and their supporters is the very heart of today’s labor movement.
