After shrinking in February, the U.S. Class I workforce grew a bit bigger last month. As of mid-March, the large roads employed 160,523 people, a 0.8 percent increase compared with February’s level and 3 percent gain versus March 2011, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data.



On a month-over-month basis, the number of train and engine service employees increased 0.3 percent to 64,612. That number increased 3.2 percent over the same period of 2011.
