LONDON — Heavy rainfall caused extensive flooding throughout London’s rail network Thursday, closing several stations and cutting services before the morning rush hour, according to a wire service.

The capital experienced the worst of storms that swept through England overnight, and rail operators warned commuters to expect long delays all day.

Jay Merritt, spokesman for the Association of Train Operating Companies, said the disruption caused by the overnight storms had created a “huge backlog of services.”

Thameslink overland service was operating a severely restricted service and large sections of the London Underground were closed because of the flooding.

London Fire Brigade reported 1,400 calls in eight hours overnight, one of its busiest evenings ever. Heavy rain was the main cause of the reported problems. Areas worst affected were in the north of the capital and forecasters predicted more rain over the next seven days.
