TRENTON, Nova Scotia — About 500 workers walked off the job at the Trentonworks rail car plant in Trenton, Nova Scotia on Monday because the company installed video surveillance cameras, CBC News reported.
The local head of the United Steelworkers Union, Don Murphy, says the cameras were installed without the workers’ knowledge. He says the workers only found out about the cameras last Friday.
However, Murphy says the two sides have been able to work out a deal to allow the workers to restart operations by Tuesday morning.
“We talked to the company a couple of times and we came to an agreement that they would remove the video cameras for 10 days and give us time to work out some solution.”
Murphy says the cameras were installed because of a couple of incidents of vandalism.
The employees are working on a major rail contract secured with the help of a $10-million provincial loan.
