EGG HARBOR CITY, N.J. — A possible bomb that forced the evacuation of a train at the train station here late Sunday night turned out to be a bag of tools, according to NJ Transit Police.
During a dispute with the conductor, a man said he had a bomb. The train, en route to Philadelphia, was stopped and evacuated by Egg Harbor City police. The Atlantic City Bomb Squad and Atlantic County K-9 units were called in and the bag of tools was detonated by authorities.
Egg Harbor City police were there to evacuate the train and secure the area, said Chief Mark Emmer, and the investigation is being conducted by NJ Transit Police.
The train was stopped and evacuated just after 11 p.m. and was still being searched at 1 a.m., according to a man who was aboard the train. Witnesses in the neighborhood said passengers were waiting in a park across the street while about 20 police officers surrounded the train. Buses were sent for the evacuated passengers.
This was the second such evacuation at the station since April.
Authorities arrested a Pennsylvania man after an April 5 bomb scare despite the fact that a search turned up nothing dangerous.
NJ Transit Police have not said whether an arrest was made Sunday night.
