WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A suspicious package delayed an Amtrak train en route to Winter Haven from South Florida on Wednesday.
The train was scheduled to arrive in Winter Haven a few minutes after 11 a.m., but did not arrive until 3:45 p.m. after it was held up for several hours south of Delray Beach.
A bomb squad from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate the package found at a Tri-Rail station in Delray Beach, said Paul Miller, a Sheriff’s Office public information officer.
“It turned out to be a plastic bag with some sort of food in it,” Miller said. “It did look suspicious where it was placed.”
The station was reopened for traffic about 11:45 a.m. and the Amtrak train passed through soon after, Miller said.
Amtrak officials could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.
