CLEVELAND, August 13 — The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund has announced the topic for this year’s Essay Contest: “The vast majority of union members make more than the minimum wage. Why should Teamsters care what the minimum wage is?”

Applications and essays are due to the Teamsters no later than September 30, 2014. This year, 200 essays will be selected to be awarded one-time $1,000 scholarships.

Applicants must be students attending a community college, 4-year institution, or a technical/vocational program, age 23 and younger who are the son, daughter or financial dependent of an eligible Teamster Member Relation (as defined in the application).

In total, the Teamsters will award $900,000 in scholarships this year.
