LAVAL, Quebec — Brother Roland Hackl has been appointed a Vice-Chairperson of the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) for a five-year term. The appointment was effective as of July 2.
Brother Hackl served the union for 27 years, including as vice-president of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference from 2015 to 2019. He was involved in countless instances of collective bargaining, interest arbitration and representing the union and members at virtually all levels of provincial and federal court and tribunals, including the CIRB. Before serving the union on a full-time basis, he worked as a conductor, brakeman and locomotive engineer for Canadian National Railway.
The CIRB is a government organization that interprets and administers the Canada Labour Code, which applies to federally regulated industries like trucking and rail. The CIRB also provides a variety of dispute resolution and mediation services. Applications to unionize a federally regulated workplace and complaints over unfair labour practices are all handled by the CIRB.
“I would like to thank Brother Hackl for his years of service to the Teamsters,” said the president of Teamsters Canada, François Laporte. “He now holds an extremely important position in the labour relations world. We are all very proud of him, and I wish him luck in his new role.”
Brother Daniel Thimineur, a former Teamster lawyer, was previously appointed to the CIRB for a three-year term, representing employees, in 2018.
Teamsters represent 125,000 members in Canada in all industries. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, represents 1.4 million workers in North America.
