NEW YORK — The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers announced that it was exploring a merger with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the New York Times reports.

James P. Hoffa, president of the Teamsters, said his 1.4-million member union would welcome a merger with the engineers, saying it would create a more powerful union that specializes in transporting goods. The engineers’ union has 59,000 members.
