new report from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) details the benefits of unions to workers, communities, and democracy.

The report finds a number of benefits in the 17 states with the highest union density, including higher incomes, greater access to health insurance, greater access to paid sick leave, and higher spending on education. States that have the highest union density also have more equitable economic, social, and democratic structures.

“Unions don’t just improve workers’ paychecks — they shape the social and political fabric of the communities they operate in and lift standards for both union and nonunion workers,” said Heidi Shierholz, EPI president.
