CHICAGO — Two crew members were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after three freight trains collided northeast of Valparaiso, Ind., on January 6, according to sheriff’s authorities.
A westbound train comprised of two engines and 77 cars that was hauling empty ethanol tankers had been stopped but was rear-ended by another westbound train with two engines and 60 cars. Cars from the first train derailed, along with the engines and some cars of the second train. Meanwhile, a third train traveling on a parallel track struck the debris and wreckage from the initial crash and also derailed, causing a fire.
Two crew members aboard the train that rear-ended the stopped train suffered non life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital in Valparaiso, Ind. for treatment. The other four crew members were not hurt.
