BRADFORD, Iowa — A Union Pacific Railroad line reopened after a train collision over the weekend.

No one was hurt when two southbound locomotives hit a train stopped on the line just north of Bradford Saturday afternoon.

Five cars went off the tracks and a locomotive overturned, dumping about 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel, UP spokesman James Barnes said.

About 1,000 gallons of fuel was recovered Sunday by removing dirt from the site.

“Our environmental contractors, working with Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials, removed the contaminated soil,” Barnes said. “That area will be monitored during the next several weeks to determine if more needs to be removed.”

Two damaged locomotives were taken off-track for repairs and the five rail cars were taken to a yard for inspection, Barnes said.

The line reopened about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
