JACKSON, Miss. — Kansas City Southern railway crews have repaired and reopened the line where two trains collided Thursday afternoon in west Jackson, railway officials said today.

The collision occurred about 4:15 p.m. when a manifest train rear-ended an intermodal train that was stopped on the tracks. An intermodal train transports various kinds of cargo in containers that then go on to ships or 18-wheelers.

As a result of the collision, two engines and six cars derailed along Bullard Street.

Three train crewmembers were taken to the hospital for evaluation, KCS officials said. Their conditions were not available today.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

During the clean-up, police closed West Capitol and Boling streets, Parkside Place and Bullard Street. However, Precinct 3 police officials said the roadways should reopen this evening.
