NEW BRAUNFELS, Tex. — A Union Pacific train traveling through New Braunfels yesterday afternoon avoided being derailed, but tied up traffic on FM 306 near Gruene for several hours in the process. New Braunfels Police say the Texas heat took its toll on the railroad tracks that sit closest to Hunter Road, causing what’s known to railroad workers as a “sun kink” or a buckle in the rails, which makes forward progress a dangerous venture, with derailment a real possibility. So Union Pacific stopped the train at around 4pm yesterday, leaving the train blocking FM 306.
