BUCYRUS, Ohio — Norfolk Southern railroad company said a freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed early Saturday morning in a field north of Bucyrus.

The accident caused a minor leak in a car carrying phenol, but company spokesman Rudy Husband said it was quickly sealed.

He was unsure exactly how much of the chemical, which is caustic to the skin and can irritate the lungs and eyes, spilled from the car.

Husband expected the accident to be cleared by the end of the day.

Bucyrus police said the accident happened just after 6 a.m., and that automobile traffic was rerouted away from three blocked crossings during cleanup.

Investigators for Norfolk Southern are looking into what caused the accident.
