CHICAGO — Amtrak’s Illinois Zephyr was canceled Monday morning after a train derailment over the weekend damaged tracks in far western Dekalb County. The Zephyr was due into Union Station Monday morning from Quincy.
The derailment Sunday afternoon caused damage along a mile of tracks near the town of Somonauk.
A freight car being pulled by an Amtrak train bound for Los Angeles derailed. The freight car was apparently dragged for about a mile before the train came to a stop. Along the way it damaged the rails, switches and a signal tower.
Officials hope to have the repairs completed Monday. Service should be back to normal for the evening run of the Illinois Zephyr.
