HAMILTON, Ohio — Three cars in a CSX freight train derailed in Hamilton early Tuesday, sending a rail car sliding into the parking lot of a business in the 600 block of Walnut Street, Hamilton police officials said.
No one was injured in the train crash, but the derailment damaged the train tracks, railroad crossing gates and streets, police said.
One of the rail cars overturned and slid into the parking lot of Hamilton Provision, 623 Walnut St., said Hamilton police Lt. Michael Martinsen.
The disabled train blocked railroad crossings at Martin Luther King Boulevard and South Fourth Street and South Third and South Front streets. Most of the intersections were reopened by afternoon, but the railroad crossing at Seventh and Walnut streets was still closed into the evening.
No injuries or hazardous spills occurred, police said, but a specialized crew was needed to assist with the massive size of the freight train.
Tuesday’s derailment was the second incident that’s happened this year along Walnut Street.
In March, seven cars of a train derailed on Walnut Street near Martin Luther King Boulevard. The three-engine train with 116 cars was traveling southbound on its way from Indianapolis to Cincinnati. The tracks also were back in service by the end of the day, said Bob Sullivan, spokesman for CSX Transportation.
