(Kansas City television station KMBC posted the following article on its website on August 2.)
MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. — A train derailed Monday in Miami County along Union-Pacific Railroad tracks, KMBC’s Johnny Rowlands.
Initially, the derailment was reported south of Lane, Kan., but Rowlands was unable to find the derailment at that location, and law enforcement officials said no train had derailed in that area. But around 6:20 p.m., Rowlands spotted the derailed train north along the tracks near Osawatomie.
Law enforcement officers said nine cars derailed, five of which turned on their sides. Officers said material dumped from several of the cars was rice and was not hazardous.
The train tracks were also significantly damaged.
There have been no reports of any injuries.
