DES MOINES, Iowa — An investigation is under way into a freight train derailment in southern Iowa.

Several cars hauling coal went off the tracks near Murray Monday night. No injuries were reported, but the derailment caused delays for an Amtrak train and two other freight trains.

The California-bound Amtrak train, which left Chicago Monday afternoon, was stranded near Chariton for about 10 hours. The train was carrying 250 passengers and crew.

A telephone call to the Clarke County sheriff’s office Tuesday was not immediately returned.
