EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A train hit a hydraulic lift at an overpass, killing a construction worker, police said.

Donovan Sailer, Jr., 47, of Paoli, died at the scene Monday on the city’s northside. Another worker, Mike Scales, 50, of Evansville, was in fair condition late Monday at Deaconess Hospital.

A CSX train traveling south struck the lift that was operated by Gohmann Asphalt doing work on the overpass. The lift was apparently too close to the track, Evansville police said.

“They were right next to the track,” said Sgt. Stephanie Loehrlein, police spokeswoman. “There was probably a breakdown in communications between the construction company and CSX.”

Loehrlein said the driver of the train was cut by flying glass and taken to Deaconess but was not seriously injured.
