FRESNO, Calif. — Railroad authorities have re-opened the tracks involved in yesterday’s massive crash and derailment after cleanup crews worked overnight to clear the wreckage.
Yesterday’s crash involved two freight trains that were heading in opposite directions that collided. The collision derailed 17 cars and 7 locomotives.
Several crew members on the trains jumped off just before the crash. Six of them were hurt, two were last listed in serious condition.
No one living near the scene was hurt.
Witnesses said they heard the screeching brakes of one of the trains before the impact.
The BNSF track between Fresno and Merced was closed after the collision early Wednesday morning. The tracks re-opened this morning.
Amtrak uses the same rails and because of the closure, had to bus its passengers.
A federal investigation into the accident is underway.
