ST. PAUL, Minn. — A new $5 billion plan by rail transit officials calls for a half-cent sales tax across the Twin Cities and a statewide 6¢ gas tax hike, the Associated Press reported.

The ten-year plan is by the Metro Transitways Development Board, which includes the seven-county metro area.

The plan calls for a multicounty referendum on a half-cent increase in the sales tax, now at 7% in Minneapolis and St. Paul and 6.5% in the remainder of the metro area.

It also calls for boosting the gas tax to 26¢ to fund road and transitway construction for trains or buses.

Some details still have to be resolved, including how the construction funds would be divided among transit and road projects.
