NEWARK, N.J. — Newark subway service resumed early Wednesday, several hours after it was shut down when a truck crashed into a light-rail train.

New Jersey Transit, which operates the service, said about 50 people were aboard the train when the crash occurred about 5:15 p.m. at Orange Street. No serious injuries were reported, but about 20 riders were treated at area hospitals for minor injuries.

While the service was shut down, the agency provided alternate bus transportation for passengers. Officials said the service would operate Wednesday on a normal schedule.

NJ Transit police are investigating the crash, but the name of the truck driver and other details were not immediately available.

The Newark subway system includes more than five miles of rail and 12 stations between Newark, Bloomfield and Belleville. It provides about 17,000 passenger trips each weekday.
