BALTIMORE — Two CSX freight trains collided on October 10 in an industrial part of south Baltimore, causing minor injuries to two crew members, officials said.

CSX spokesman Gary Sease said one of the trains struck the side of the other at about 11:45 a.m. at an X-patterned crossing, derailing three empty boxcars and a locomotive. He said the eastbound train hit the side of the 93rd car of the westbound train.

Baltimore fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright said two crew members on the locomotive of one of the trains had minor injuries because of the collision and were taken to local hospitals.

The trains, which were carrying various merchandise, were traveling at low speeds, Sease said. The speed limit in the area is 25 miles an hour.

“It does not appear to be bad,” Cartwright said from the scene. “It’s definitely not a major collision.”

No fuel was spilled, Cartwright said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the collision, but CSX officials were investigating.
