WASHINGTON — The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public Board meeting on Tuesday, November 29, at 9:30 a.m., in its Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L’Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, DC.

There are two items on the agenda:

Railroad Accident Report – Collision and Derailment of Norfolk Southern Freight Train in Graniteville, South Carolina

On January 6, 2005, northbound Norfolk Southern freight train 192 encountered an improperly lined switch that diverted the train from the main line onto an industry track where it struck an unoccupied, parked train P22. The collision derailed both locomotives and 16 of the 42 freight cars if train 192 as well as the locomotive and 1 of 2 cars of train P22.Among the derailed cars from train 192 were three tank cars containing chlorine, one of which was breached, releasing chlorine gas. The train engineer and eight other people died as a result of chlorine gas inhalation. About 5,400 people within a 1-mile radius of the derailment site were evacuated for several days many of them complaining of respiratory difficulties. Press Contact: Keith Holloway

Safety Study – Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) in
Liquid Pipelines

The Safety Board will review the Supervisory Control Data Acquisition
(SCADA) in liquid pipeline safety study. This three-year study describes SCADA systems being used at pipeline companies that transport hazardous liquids and examines the extent to which the SCADA system design helps controllers in detecting leaks and responding to products released.
