SOUTH AMBOY, N.J. — Two people were killed when they were struck by New Jersey Transit trains in separate incidents, a wire service reported.

Vincent Alvino, 73, of Glen Rock, was killed about 3:30 p.m. Monday at the borough’s station. He was struck by a Hoboken-bound Bergen Line train that had departed from Suffern, N.Y., said Penny Bassett-Hackett, an NJ Transit spokeswoman.

Officials said about 40 passengers were on the train at the time of the accident.

About three hours later, a 32-year-old woman was killed at a South Amboy station after she walked around a lowered crossing gate and tried to cross the tracks, authorities said.

The woman had just been dropped off by her uncle when she was struck by a westbound train. Authorities said she was trying to reach another New York-bound train that was just about to depart.

Her uncle, who witnessed the accident, became very distraught and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The woman’s name was not released because some family members had not been notified of her death.

The train that struck the woman had departed from New York and was headed toward Long Branch with about 700 people aboard, Bassett-Hackett said. Those passengers were later transferred to two other trains and continued on to Long Branch, she said.
