AKRON, Ohio — Two boys, 17 and 16, were taken into custody Tuesday in connection with a CSX train derailment in May.

Police said the Akron teens have admitted to placing a railroad tie on the tracks May 8, causing the derailment of a train carrying coal in Akron near the Barberton line.

Two locomotives and 103 rail cars jumped the track, spilling tons of coal at 31st Street Southwest and Welsh Avenue. Damage was set at nearly $500,000.

The boys, who face charges of vandalism, are being held in the Summit County Juvenile Detention facility.
