(The following report appeared on the Seattle Times website on June 10.)
SEATTLE, Wash. — Two cars of a Union Pacific freight train derailed early this morning near Boeing Field, disrupting passenger train service between Tacoma and Seattle.
There were no injuries and no hazardous materials spills, said Gus Melonas, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The two derailed cars were segmented flatcars designed to carry more than one container, Melonas said. They did not overturn.
The company is bringing in equipment from Vancouver, Wash., to get the cars back on track and repair the tracks, Melonas said. The tracks are expected to reopen as early as 6 p.m. today.
The accident blocked both the Sounder and Amtrak passenger trains from running today. Stranded passengers were bused to their destinations, Sound Transit spokesman Lee Somerstein said. Amtrak and Sounder service will resume tomorrow.
