CARROLL, Iowa — An investigation is under way into a train accident near Carroll in western Iowa.
Two Union Pacific trains derailed shortly before one o’clock this morning. It happened underneath an overpass on US Highway 30 just west of Carroll.
No one was injured.
UP spokesman Mark Davis says the derailment happened as the two trains were passing each other on separate tracks.
One train with a total of 75 cars was hauling pickup trucks and cars from Chicago to Los Angeles. The last eight cars derailed.
The other train, with 99 cars, was headed to Chicago from North Platte, Nebraska. That train was carrying a variety of products, including canned vegetables, lumber and soda ash, which is used to make glass. Davis says 26 cars on that train derailed. No hazardous materials were involved.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the derailment.
