As 2011 drew to a close, the U.S. Class Is employed fewer people than they did in November. As of mid-December, the large railroads’ workforce stood at 159,717, down 0.3 percent from November’s level, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data. One of the few exemptions was transportation employees (train and engine), which was up 0.4 percent to 64,397.
On a year-over-year basis, however, the overall workforce grew 3.4 percent.
