BOCA RATON, Fla. — U.S. Plastic Lumber Corp. announced today that its Engineered Products group has received a purchase order to supply six hundred recycled Composite railroad ties, trademarked DuraTie(R), for use in the country of Brazil, the company said in a press release

Michael McCann, chief operating officer of USPL, said, “Although this is not as large an order as we have received from municipal transit authorities in the United States over the last few months, we believe this is a very exciting opportunity for USPL. Our Composite railroad ties have great benefits, including a life expectancy of many times longer than wood, especially in areas of the world with as much precipitation as countries like Brazil.” National Sales Manager, Dan Brink, stated, “The engineering group that we have worked with for the last three years has done a great deal of study which included visits to actual test locations, customer installations, and manufacturing facilities here in the United States while researching the benefits of this technology. After evaluating our crossties for the last several years, it is evident that they have made a commitment to the long term economic benefits that our composite rail ties can offer as well as the positive impact on the environment.”

USPL’s DuraTie Composite railroad ties are made of recycled plastic and fiberglass for durability and strength. Benefits include a greater life expectancy over wood ties; no hazardous materials used or needed to have or maintain insect and rot resistance; no hazardous materials generated; and, no seepage of hazardous materials. McCann added, “Brazil is very sensitive about the environment and protecting its rain forests and our product is a great benefit for the environment over wood ties treated with hazardous chemicals.”

The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association is developing specifications for plastic composite railroad ties. Wood ties are replaced in the United States at a rate of some 10-15 million ties annually. USPL’s railroad ties are nonconductive and do not absorb water, like wooden ties, and help eliminate the effects of stray-current corrosion of track hardware in electrified mass transit systems, while significantly extending the life of the railroad ties.

USPL’s Engineered Products group manufactures a wide range of specialty items: products for the transportation industry, including railroad ties, scuff liners for light- and medium-duty trucks and wall panels for trailers; skirts for spa manufacturers; slats for barbecue grill manufacturers; and substrates for door manufacturers. The portfolio also comprises packaging products, like cornerboards and pallets, in addition to tiersheets and slipsheets, which offer alternative shipping platforms designed for low- to no-contamination concerns as well as reusability.

Collaborating directly with end users and original equipment manufacturers, USPL’s Engineered Products group works to meet the design and performance needs of a diversity of applications. The mission of the Engineered Products group is to create products that solve their customers’ problems and, ultimately, save them money.
