U.S. rail traffic in March 2023 dropped from the same month last year—down 7.6% or 192,349 carloads and intermodal units, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported April 5. This follows February’s 5.2% drop from the prior-year period. For the week ending April 1, 2023, total carloads came in at 233,413, down 0.4%, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 234,017 containers and trailers, down 13.4% compared with 2022.
