LONDON — Train services across northern England were disrupted Wednesday as conductors held a one-day strike in a long-running pay dispute, according to a wire service.

Several hundred conductors at Arriva Trains Northern have staged 17 walkouts this year in their bid for higher pay.

Arriva said trains were running across three quarters of its network in north and northwestern England Wednesday despite the strike.

The company said it had offered a pay deal that would raise salaries by 1,000 pounds (dlrs 1,500) a year. But the Rail Maritime and Transport Union said the offer was worse than one tabled at the start of the dispute seven months ago.

The conductors plan another strike on Saturday, the start of a three-day holiday weekend.
