NEW YORK — A Metro-North Railroad conductor accused of assaulting a Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officer at Grand Central Terminal last week was contending with a “belligerent” customer with a history of drunken behavior when a confrontation with officers escalated, the head of the commuter rail’s largest union said Thursday.
