SILVER LAKE, Kan. — Union Pacific crews have been working to clean up mounds of coal that spilled in northeast Kansas when 43 rail cars derailed.
Authorities said no injuries were reported in the wreck, which occurred Saturday evening north of Silver Lake in Shawnee County.
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said Sunday the train was heading to southeast Missouri from Wyoming when 43 rail cars derailed near a crossing. He said there were 134 rail cars in the train.
Davis said crews were replacing about 1,500 feet of damaged track, and the cause of the wreck is under investigation.
He said there was no damage estimated from the wreck, and that the rail line would be opened Sunday evening. It’s unclear when the spilled coal would be cleaned up.
